Plan a PLANT SWAP … great idea for Garden Clubs!

Man with wheelbarrow

This is a fun way to share plants with friends and neighbors or plan a fund raiser with your garden club next year.

Send us your info and we'll list it here for you.

Plant Exchange & Potluck

Some garden clubs plan a picnic and make a day of it! It has become an annual event in some places and you'll find it grows each year because they are so much fun. This is a great way to divide what you have, in exchange for plants you'd like to have without spending a fortune!   Don't know which is best, the food or the plant swap!   Everyone gets a ticket for each plant they bring, and than everyone takes a turn 'Round Robin Style' to pick a plant to take home. Some clubs have 'Door Prizes' donated by their gardening friends or local businesses.

Carnival Tent

Tired of baking… for all those fund raisers, suggest an annual ´Plant Sale´ and just see what fun it is to trade or sell your plants!   Some growers will even give you special deals on plants to sell at your event!   The kids can join in and have fun too, they just love to put soil and seeds in little cups.   They can start annual seeds in little giffy pots, or can make 'garden art' to sell at the event.   This is a great place to sell herbs and dried flowers too, or invite a 'master gardener' to give a special lecture or demonstration.   These events will grow on you!   Happy gardening !!

Tips for plant swaps

Plan ahead… save your plastic containers, just wash out with soapy water and let them dry in the sun. (Remeber the smaller the container, the less dirt you'll need; unless you'll be growing them in this container for more than a month, you don't need a lot of soil).

Markers can be anything plastic or wooden you can write on… from plastic ware, plastic plant markers, or wooden craft sticks. I found a 'deco paint pen' works the best and the writing lasts the longest, but a grease pencil will work too. People will appreciate knowing the plants name, variety and bloom color with an indication of sun, partial shade, or full shade requirements, but I've seen some home made tags with extensive and creative information!

Thistle"One man's trash is another man's treasure…" and so it goes with plants!   If you just can't stand to have another day lily in your yard… someone else is just dying to plant 5 of them!   I once saw 2 women fighting over 'Marsh Marigolds' which are considered an ugly bog weed by others!   What may be common to you can be special to others.
